Snow over New Eridu, snow on the practice grounds, snow upon the courtyard. Before dawn, her blade, a sealed heirloom. Her breath traces a poem of the cold. Draw, cut, sheathe. The flurries close her footprints and the meeting she skipped carries on without her. The markings of the practice buried in the falling snow, to be carved yet again, once more.

and linger, so I have.
these motions, carved into my being,
come in rhythm with my waking breath.
my hands remember,
yet my heart cannot bear to name.
cut,
white gathers upon the ashes,
burying the despairing warmth that lingered.
and yet coldness, in all its silence,
offers nothing to my grievances.
sheathe,
and kneel beneath the wandering flurries,
before the pale shapes beyond the fog.
to those whose footsteps end
where mine must continue.
